Hot Child in the City

“Danger in the shape of somethin’ wild
Stranger dressed in black, she’s a hungry child
No one knows who she is or what her name is
I don’t know where she came from or what her game is”

Hot child in the city
Hot child in the city
Runnin wild looking pretty
Hot child in the city

I couldn’t help but think of this song today as I ran. I have always loved this song since the days of Carrie Bradshaw and Sex and The City.

It was hot today and I was just trying to just get through. Running through a sea of tourists and crazies!

Instead of running to the boardwalk or even biking there, today I drove. It was so hot. My legs were still a little sore from my 6 miler this past Saturday. Today I jogged an easy speed 3 miles. I stopped about halfway through to take a water break from one of the boardwalk water fountains! I know…YUCK! It was so warm. My visor, sunglasses, and dry-fit clothes didn’t hardly help. As I headed back north towards my car my knee and foot began to twinge. I started to have thoughts of complaining run through my head. Then I was passed on the bike path by a man with a prosthetic leg. He was biking with his family and he had a big smile. I quickly rid myself of any negative thoughts that were trying to creep in.

I finished my run at the end of the boardwalk. And returned to my car as one hot and sweaty child in the city!

79pt amrap

Not much sleep, but up and getting to it early. Weekly Thursday morning 79pt. With my almost daily running, my schedule can only seem to fit in 1 day a week of 79pt. I know it would benefit me to do more. So every Thursday I try to get as much out of the WOD as possible. This week an amrap. What is an amrap? As Many Rounds As Possible.

5 participants in the workout. The rower would be the pacer for rotation.

The amrap below:

Row 300 meters
K2E (knee to elbows)
Basic abs
Push press (8lbs)
Box dips

25 minutes

We completed 4 total rounds in the allotted 25 minutes.

Great calorie burn and just sore enough!!!! 🙂

I did indulge in some beer and chips last night with friends! Should’ve forgone those…the drinks not the friends 🙂

Lazy Wednesday

Exhausted today! But due to the fact I scarfed down four cupcakes yesterday, I figured I would drag myself onto the boardwalk for a little something. And a little something is all I did. The wind was blowing. More red flags today. The ocean was the roughest I have seen it yet this year. I filled the meter with 30 minutes worth of parking. I managed to bust out a handful of 200 meter sprints followed by 1 mile of light jogging. I did notice a lot of people on the beach. Due to the fact they couldn’t get in the water, they were forced to use the wind in their favor. Everything from a blow up slide to beautiful kites. The kites below really intrigued me.

Enjoy your lazy day 🙂

The Fighter

Have you ever been in a fighting mood? I don’t mean fighting physically. I mean the kind of day where you may be fighting different types of battles. It could be a battle within yourself. A
battle at work, or within your family. With your guy, or with a friend.
Maybe you are just feeling like you have no control. Well ok all you control freaks out there, the one thing you will always have control over is the intensity of your run. I wasn’t necessarily in the
“fighting mood” per say today. But I did find myself in a slight battle against mother nature this afternoon when I was heading home. The weather reports were ominous and we were under a severe thunderstorm warning. Blah, blah, blah!!! You know from previous blogs, I will not run in thunder and lightning. But I do not mind running in the rain. There was a quick shower with booms late in the day today.
Right around 5:00pm, I caught a glimpse of the sun and knew it was my
chance to get the run in.

I drove down to the boardwalk. I didn’t want to be to far from home in
the event the storms returned. The workout on tap today was a tempo
run of 3 miles. I have been having success with these workouts the
more I do them. I feel my endurance is better. I also feel like a stronger runner and more conditioned than I did before I started some of this speed work. As I approached the boardwalk to begin, I could the red flags up on the lifeguard stands. The water was not inviting.
The sky also looked a bit iffy. It was a good thing a tempo run was in
order. Like it or not, I was going to have to run fast to beat the clouds.

I actually timed myself today. The 3 mile tempo run came in right
under 27 minutes. Not bad! I was channeling all those battles within
me.

I listened to the new single by The Gym Class Heroes. Appropriately it is titled
“There GoesThe Fighter”. The song was a great motivator and today it happened to play as my last song. It brought me in at a nice clip.

I thought I would include part of the chorus for you. The lyrics were very apropos.

Give em hell, turn their heads
Gonna live life ’til we’re dead.
Give me scars, give me pain
Then they’ll say to me, say to me, say to me
There goes the fighter, there goes the fighter
Here comes the fighter
That’s what they’ll say to me, say to me, say to me,
This one’s a fighter

I recommend downloading this song and putting it into your running
playlist ASAP!

Use whatever battles or fights you have within you as motivation to train. Fight for anything that’s worth it!
Channel that energy into something positive. After my run today I felt
very empowered!

And by the way….it didn’t even storm!

Happy Fighting 🙂 🙂

To The Narrows

Sunday evening and getting ready for my return to reality on Monday morning. I had most of the last week off. As you noticed from the blogs this week, there was a lot of activity going on. The start to a perfect day for me usually consists of some sort of exercise. I had an opportunity to do that a lot last week without having to rush to work. Today was no exception. I went to bed at a reasonable hour last nite, knowing I wanted to get up this morning and run. I decided I would do my run in the shade of the park. The park close to my house is First Landing State Park. It literally is right out the door. Here on the East Coast we were again being treated to severely hot temperatures. Due to the heat, I quickly got out of bed this morning when I woke up at 7:15. I was out the door and pounding the pavement by 7:50. I ran into the park about 2 miles on the paved road until I reached a part of the park known as the Narrows. It’s called this because it is a narrow passage of water where Linkhorn Bay and Broad Bay meet. I paused and snapped a few shots featured below. I then headed back to the house on the trail that runs parallel to the road. It’s a great trail because it follows the coastline of the beach along the Narrows. I tacked on another mile through the North End after exiting the park. The run totaled out just under 5 miles. I ran for 46 minutes. I felt surprisingly good on the run, even after the 2 large gin and tonics I made at the house last night 🙂

After the run I hoped on my bike and met a friend on the boardwalk for beach church and breakfast.

I spent the rest of the day soaking in a few more rays off the beach. It was a great end to my stay cation. It will be tough getting back on track this Monday morning. I’ll be trading in the flops for heels!

Happy Monday
Jess

Runner Girl to Walker Girl

What to do when it’s so hot?!?! Today is a day off from work and couldn’t justify not getting a workout in. Yesterday was my day of rest from exercise, so I wanted to sweat today. Also I treated myself to a couple cocktails last night and wanted to sweat them out. Well sweat them out I did!!!

This morning was overcast. The clouds started to burn off by noon. That was about the time I jumped on my bike and headed south to the boardwalk. I made sure I was well hydrated and dressed in light colored clothes. I put on my visor and shades before heading out. I figured I would bike to about 31st street, park the bike then get in some power walking. I parked at 30th and started out running south. I ran slow and steady. I wasn’t worried about time. I ran to 5th street where I stopped, grabbed some water and wiped myself down. I was soaked. I noticed I had paced at about a 10 minute mile. I then continued my jogging back north until I hit the pier. This was a three mile run. I still had a mile to go to get back to my bike. I decided a nice walk back was plenty. I took a few minutes to stretch and regroup before biking back to 64th. It was a good workout for a hot day.

Always be aware of your weather conditions. Don’t push yourself. Walking is a great workout! Not everyday has to be the best burn!

Happy walking
Jess
