Problem Run

Wednesday afternoon in Virginia Beach took the brunt of severe thunderstorms. Thunder…lighting….winds!!! The radar scene looked as though it was here to stay all day. Needless to say, I was not in any hurry to venture out for lunch. Instead I munched on the string cheese, banana, and Kind Bar I had in my purse. I figured with the rain, I wouldn’t be able to get a run in and would eat dinner early. Well as luck would have it, at 5 pm the sun was back out shining. The temperature had cooled off quite a bit. So I opted for lacing up my sneakers and proceeded to the boardwalk. With it being a bit cooler, I thought it would be a good evening to run the entire boardwalk. Five miles! Before running I did some stretching and noticed my legs were feeling very tired. Today wasn’t a tempo run, so I was ok with going slow. I did decide to wear my watch and time the 5 mile run. This time would be considered a “worse case scenario” time. With the Rock n Roll approaching, my leg of the relay is 5.2 miles. I am aiming to run my leg somewhere between 45-49 minutes.

I began the run and I was pacing slow. My form was off. My legs felt weird and my body had no energy. The “purse” lunch I had was not enough. I made my way heading south. It took me 24 minutes for the first 2.5 miles. I hit the turn around to come north and paused for a quick break. Ugh! The second half of the run included several walking breaks. I made it to 27th street with King Neptune in my sights. I was trying to make it at least to him at 31st street. But I couldn’t do it. I was spent. I did a running/walking combo to the end and finished at about 52 minutes.

I was so bummed and upset over my bad run. I think I may be over do for a few days of running rest.

Saturday is usually my long run day, but this weekend it will be filled with a paddle boarding retreat! Perfect timing.

    • Yes I will check that out. Thanks for the tip! I’m taking the next few days off from running. My body needs to recover. Cross trained this morning. It was a good workout.
