Tuesday Track : Waves, ECSC

This week I thought it was appropriate to give a shout out to the East Coast Surfing Championships happening here in Virginia Beach.  Our Tuesday Track this week is Waves. This song by Blondfire is a must have on your Summer 2013 soundtrack. When I listen to it, I can picture it being the background music for a surfing video. It isn’t a fast tempo, but a steady beat for you to include on a long run or bike ride. Check out the song for yourself here.

“Waves,

Picking you up

Pushing you down,

They’re always around

Waves,

Just like dream

Silver and green,

We live in between”

Head out to ECSC this week and hopefully see some waves of your own. Here is the event calendar for ECSC.

***Check out the ECSC 8k this Saturday . It is always a fun run! Check out the post from the race last year.  I finished at a time of 45:22. Let’s how how we do this Saturday!

The Fit Petite Lives in The Fittest City in America

This week Facebook announced their pick for the fittest cities in America. It is no surprise to me that my own city, Virginia beach was on the tip top of the list! I have often written about how I continue to fall in love with this city. Now my two loves, Virginia Beach and fitness, have come together on one list.

This isn’t the first time Virginia Beach has been found on such a list. Earlier this year, Virginia Beach was named 18th on the top 50 fittest cities list from USA Today. In 2011 we ranked 9th out of the Shape Top 10 Fittest Cities list. In 2009 we were named #10 in Men’s Fitness Fittest Cities list. With a wonderful climate and coastline it makes sense that Virginia Beach would be hold 1st place.

Facebook 2013 10 fittest cities list:

1. Virginia Beach, Virginia
2. Colorado Springs, Colorado
3. Austin, Texas
4. San Antonio, Texas
5. Livingston, New Jersey
6. Portland, Oregon
7. El Paso, Texas
8. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
9. Tacoma, Washington
10. Albuquerque, New Mexico

Here are some of my favorite FIT moments from around the city over the past couple years here in Virginia Beach.

Product Review: Lululemon Track Attack Short

There are several tell tale signs that summer is in full effect here in Virginia Beach. Tourists have taken over the boardwalk, training for the Rock n Roll 1/2 marathon has begun, and the temperatures are steadily creeping up. The combination of the temps and the training make it necessary for me to switch out the running tights for a much cooler and looser option. Any of you runner girls know that trying to find a good pair of running shorts can be as stressful or as difficult as finding a great pair of jeans, or even the perfect swimsuit. I have run in Nike shorts for years and was apprehensive to sway from that.

During a custom fit session at Lululemon a couple weeks ago, I decided to give their running shorts a chance and atleast try them on. They have several styles, cuts, and lengths to chose from. Soon after slipping on the Track Attack Short, I was pleasantly surprised. The feature  I loved the most was the longer length. Most of my Lulu bottoms are a 4, but I went with a size 6 in the short. I like my shorts to be on the baggy fit side. The adjustable waistband keeps them from falling down. Other impressive features of the Track Attack Short are that they were designed with the idea of fitting an athletic leg. The fabric is lightweight and is designed to handle sweat. The Track Attack Short contains a small pocket on the side, big enough to hold your keys, chapstick, or gu packet.

I have been wearing these shorts every Saturday on my long run. I make sure that by the start of each weekend, these shorts have been washed and ready to go. Yesterday I ran for 8 miles and didn’t have to adjust the shorts once. No bunching, no chaffing, no rubbing. These black shorts seem to be miracle workers! After an 8 mile run, it is evident to me that these shorts can handle the Rock n Roll 1/2 marathon just fine!

When stocking up on summer running gear, I urge you to grab the Track Attack Short. Don’t spend $$$$ on cheap knock-offs trying to make it work. A $54 price point is worth it for the Track Attack Short because you will get it right the first time.

Go Shorty….

Promote Virginia Beach

In light of recent events in Virginia Beach, I feel inclined to take a bit of a stand here. I attended the Virginia Beach Town Hall meeting on Wednesday May 1. The majority of the discussion was based on social media and how it was used to spread the word of a beach party weekend here in Virginia Beach to a less than stellar crowd. If social media can have such an impact of attracting this undesirable crowd and promoting this disastrous event, lets use it in our favor.

I challenge all of you who live, work, or just love Virginia Beach to start promoting the city with your own means. Use your Twitter, Facebook, blogs, emails! We as citizens can eliminate the cloud over this city by an isolated incident and put focus on what a great place Virginia Beach is most of the time.

While I do feel more can be done to control crowds and disorderly behavior, my responsibility as a citizen is to promote and help attract a more respectful group of tourists.

On the Tenth Day of Christmas

On the tenth day of Christmas my true love gave to me…gear for hanging ten!

Living at the beach creates a perfect place for playing on the water. Two summers ago I bought a paddle board. It’s been a great way to explore the local waterways.

I am set for beaching it all summer, but I have no cold weather water gear.

A wardrobe of wetsuits or spring suits would be appreciated and utilized for some winter wave riding and hanging ten🏄🏄🏄

Great suits can be found on the Hang Ten and Roxy websites.

On the Eighth Day of Christmas

On the eighth day of Christmas my true love gave to me 8:00 pm dinner reservations, 7 minute miles, a six pack of brewskis, fifth of vodka, Four Season’s Getaway, 3 purple shadows, a pair of cozy Uggs, and some snow for me to ski!

Going out to dinner is one of my favorite things to do. Gathering around a table with great company and great food warms my heart. The ritual of getting dressed up, meeting friends, having some cocktails, and sitting for hours is a wonderful way to spend time with people. A table of 8 or a table of 2, I’ll take either one 😉 . Living in Virginia Beach I am fortunate enough to have lots of great restaurant choices. In the summer it’s great to bike and meet friends for a casual dinner and drinks. In the winter several restaurants light the fire places and the locals cozy on up.

Here are a few of my favorite local VB oceanfront spots, in no particular order.

1. Big Sam’s – great casual dinning, mostly locals, weekly specials, over looking Rudee Inlet, central fireplace, perfect for sitting for hours or catching a quick bite

2. Tautogs – I’ve eaten here in jeans and also in a cocktail dress, warm fireplace, the old beach cottage has a fantastic beer and cocktail selection, always order one of the specials, you won’t be disappointed, great for birthdays

3. Pacifica– tapas menu, endless cocktail menu (my favorite drink is the Tony Sinclair), cozy fireplace, great for a date spot or girls night out

4. Il Giardino’s – great Italian food, great atmosphere, great wine

5. Baja Cantina – Best fish tacos I’ve ever had, great bartenders, order the dip trio with queso-guac-salsa, perfect for throwing on a hoodie and Uggs and relaxing in a booth

6. 501 – best dirty martini in town, best weekday happy hour, can show up right after work for a bite on the way home, always a good crowd, fireplace and live music!

I hope you enjoy these places as much as I do. Maybe I’ll meet ya there sometime!

Happy Dining
Jess
